Complementary Services

Results In metagenomics are achieved by attention to detail. The reproducibility of sampling, and the robustness of sample transport and storage, make the difference between questionable data and publishable evidence. In addition to our standard workflows, we at Microomics offer a range of complementary services that secure every stage of a microbiome project from sampling through to publication.

Consultancy and sampling protocols. After discussing the specific characteristics of the project with our team, we design sampling protocols and guidelines tailored to your sample type (faeces, saliva, soil, surfaces, etc.). We reduce pre-analytical bias by clear requirements for volume, preservatives, timing, and required metadata.

Logistics solutions. We manage sample collection and transport as well as use triple packaging and temperature monitoring from anywhere in Spain to our laboratories in Barcelona. We define “time-to-freeze” windows, the use of dry ice or preservatives, and we document incidents to maintain end-to-end traceability.

Biobanking and storage until analysis, with storage at –80°C, and full recording (location, batches, chain of custody). We ensure that samples arrive at the laboratory in optimal condition for 16S/ITS, shotgun or multi-omics workflows.

Support through to publication. We support projects up to manuscript submission: preparation of methods sections, figure and table preparation (diversity, differential analysis, pathways), and responses to reviewers, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions about our Complementary Services

What does the sampling protocol include and why does it improve results?

Each sample type requires a different sampling strategy. The sampling protocol standardises collection, reducing human error and the introduction of confounding factors. Sampling instructions are prepared and adapted, including for patients whose samples are collected at home.

Can complementary services be purchased separately?

These services are included to facilitate project development and must be associated with a metagenomics service (amplicon sequencing, shotgun metagenomics, or transcriptomics). It is not necessary to use all complementary services. Once the initial meeting has been held, the client decides which services to include.

Some examples of sample types include: Human samples (faeces, saliva, nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs, skin and mucosal samples), veterinary samples (faeces, biopsies, swabs, and urine), environmental and agricultural samples (soil, rhizosphere and root samples, filtered freshwater and seawater, sediments, and filtered air), surface and biofilm samples, and food ingredients and products.

Biological samples should be collected, transported and stored according to the downstream analyses to be performed. Different sampling options are available, including the use of bacteriostatic agents to minimise sampling bias.

What does the initial meeting involve?

Metagenomics and NGS projects involve multiple stages and variables, and the initial assessment is essential. In the first meeting, our team asks questions to understand the project objectives, the biological question, timing constraints, sample types, sampling strategy, integration with other omics or analytical techniques, and potential contaminants. Based on this information, we develop a technical-scientific proposal and a commercial proposal detailing each component of the project should it be carried out by Microomics.
